Arsenal's Disputed Partnership Agreement with Visit Rwanda Is Ending This Coming Year

Arsenal Football Club has confirmed that its disputed sponsorship partnership with Visit Rwanda will expire in June of next year.

Context and Criticism

The arrangement, said to be worth around ÂŁ10 million annually, began in 2018 and has since faced significant scrutiny.

Such scrutiny stems from the country's reported backing for the M23 militia in ongoing conflicts in the eastern region of the adjacent DRC.

In February, Arsenal faced allegations of committing a disrespectful act to the authorities in Congo by not arranging a meeting with the DRC's foreign minister to address the sponsorship.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda functions as an arm of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a public entity.

It is widely believed that Arsenal committed to and maintained this partnership primarily to expand their fanbase in Africa.

However, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “mutually agreed” to end their collaboration.

“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the primary aims of the partnership – promoting conservation and eco-friendly travel, inspiring millions of supporters to explore Rwanda, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” read an club announcement.

The statement continued that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's ambition to become an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and host more global sporting events while executing local football projects that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches develop their skills and inspire greater participation in athletics nationwide.

Management Opinion and Fan Backlash

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, portrayed the arrangement as a “important voyage” and asserted it had been “propelling” the club's goals.

But that is not how a segment of the club's followers, with the campaign group Gunners for Peace holding rallies outside the North London venue during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against PSG in April's conclusion.

Protesters displayed a banner that read “Drop Visit Rwanda” and handed out sleeves to conceal the Visit Rwanda logo on uniforms.

Wider Landscape and Additional Teams

During that period, the French champions renewed their partnership deal with Visit Rwanda for several more years.

Simultaneously, Atlético Madrid signed a fresh deal for the equivalent timeframe that has resulted in the emblem appearing on the Madrid-based team's men's and women's shirts.
