Prison Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He battled the law and justice triumphed.

Sixty days following receiving a 27-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” the nation's political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now looks jail-bound.

Anticipated Incarceration

The adjudicated plotter – who had been living under home confinement in his mansion while a set of judicial steps and appeals unfold – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the coming days, during growing rumors that he will be moved to a notorious high-security penitentiary.

Historical Remarks on Prisoners

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the conservative ex- soldier displayed minimal compassion for the country's jailed individuals.

“What’s the need to offer these scoundrels a good life?” he once mused. “They should just get messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to end up in prison, all you have to do is not rape, abduction or rob.”

Incarceration Location Speculation

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, a group of four this week toured the facility in an apparent effort to prevent the high court from banishing him there.

Senator Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, claimed he anticipated the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and worried his location could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious digestive issues – the outcome of a near-fatal knife attack during the last election race – implied it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His health is highly critical. He will not be able to manage if they move him to Papuda … It will be awful,” he added, who also worried about packed cells and the condition of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells accommodating forty inmates: “It's practically one square meter per prisoner.

“We conversed to the convicts and they protest, of course, of the terrible cuisine,” added the senator.

Supporters React

The senator isn't the lone figure speaking out before the former president’s predicted detention.

Writing in a prominent publication, a different supporter, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the greatest political injustice in its record”.

“It represents an injustice that gnaws the hearts of many Brazilian citizens,” the former minister said.

Divided Popular Response

It is possibly true due to the significant support Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. But his anticipated imprisonment has also warmed the feelings of millions others who feel he deserves to be imprisoned for conspiring to stop the incoming president from becoming president – and additionally conspiring to have him assassinated.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the current leader's Workers’ party, said: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Nobody wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to obtain proper treatment – but dignified care behind bars. He must not carry on being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years applauding the harsh treatment of convicts, had unexpectedly woken up to their rights. “Just now has the far-right – which has consistently claimed that human rights are not for lawbreakers – opted to inspect a jail to discover what circumstances are truly like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, insulting treatment”.

Possible Incarceration Environment

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently houses about 14,000 detainees, his expected assigned facility seems to be a nearby penitentiary for police officers and other “particular” prisoners called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are far more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro had while residing in the impressive leader's home, around 12 miles away.
